Does having a CCP make a difference in pay and career progression?

Based on job posting data, most employers prefer or strongly prefer candidates for compensation roles to have a CCP certification. The certification gives employers the assurance that a certified candidate has attained a specific level of knowledge and skills and is a compensation expert. Studies have estimated that pay levels could be up to 10% higher for those with the CCP. Promotions may also be favorably influenced by the CCP certification, indicating that the incumbent has a strong grounding in the compensation body of knowledge.

Who grants the CCP certification?

World at Work, is a respected nonprofit professional association focused on compensation and total rewards. World at Work is considered the gold standard by compensation professionals for professional development in compensation and rewards. The Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) is a sought after and popular credential.

What are the requirements for a CCP Certification?

Candidates for the CCP certification must pass ten required exams that cover the knowledge and skill base required of compensation professionals. Job analysis, base pay administration, market pricing, variable pay, accounting, quantitative principles, regulatory, communication, rewards management and business acumen are topics covered in the certification program. Each exam has a time limit of 2 hours to complete and is given at a designated testing center using a computer-based testing tool.

What preparation is recommended for the CCP exam?

Prior to taking a CCP exam, candidates usually complete the associated course. Courses can be taken in three formats: Classroom, a traditional instructor-led course conducted over 2 days; Virtual classroom, the course is conducted online with live instruction and interaction with the participates: or self-study, independent learning using pre-recorded materials that are available to participate to review for 60 days. Some extremely experienced individuals may pass some of the exams using experiential knowledge and opt to not attend some of the classes, however, the most typical path is to complete the coursework and then sit for the exams.

How much does it cost to obtain CCP certification?

The cost of training and exam fees to obtain the CCP can vary based on the type of instruction that is chosen. Members of World at Work get a discount on pricing as well. Pricing for a single in-person class and exam range between $2200 for non-members/ $1495 for members. Unless the class is held locally, the cost of travel and lodging need to be added. A virtual course costs $2200 for non-members/$1495 for members, with no travel expenses required. A self-study course and exam fee are $1780 for non-members/ $1275 for members. Some employers will reimburse employees for some or all of the expenses to obtain a CCP certification, recognizing the value of an employee with the Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) credential. The total cost of obtaining the CCP could range between $12,759 to $14,950 excluding any travel expenses.
