Veterinary Technician assists veterinarian with exams, surgeries, and first aid. Collects and documents case history and treatment details. Being a Veterinary Technician monitors vital signs and condition of animals being treated and provides nursing care. Takes X rays, EKG, Ultrasound, and performs various lab test including urinalysis and blood counts. Additionally, Veterinary Technician depending on state regulations, may administer anesthesia, injections, and perform dental prophylaxis, catheterization, and other procedures under supervision of a veterinarian. Instructs pet owners on how to administer medication and other animal care skills. Typically requires an associate degree. Depending on state, may require RVT certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Veterinary Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. The Jockey Hollow Veterinary Technician is responsible for performing a variety of healthcare duties to increase efficiency while focusing on patient care and client care. We are a service industry and the technician is responsible to act as an advocate and liaison for the client to our hospital. The technician/assistant is a representative of the hospital and must always act professionally, courteously and carefully. The technician/assistant is routinely entrusted with patient assessments, anesthesia, procedures, record keeping and treatments. The technician/assistant must be detail oriented and capable of acting independently to make good decisions, respond quickly and calmly to crises and maintain high standards of patient care. Technician/assistants need to communicate clearly with the doctor’s, other hospital personnel, and clients to ensure that patients receive the care that they need.
