    SUMMARY OF POSITION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The BSC Campus Police Department is a Community Service Oriented Patrol (CSOP) organization. Building relationships with the college community is an essential part of Campus Safety Officer (CSO) duties. CSOs are often the first contact the campus community will have with the department. Successful candidates will understand customer service principles, conflict de-escalation, diversity, and basic community policing concepts.

    CSO positions assist the Campus Police Department in fulfilling BSC's mission. Hours and days may vary in accordance with the needs of the Campus Police Department to include weekends, holidays, events, and required training.

    CSOs are responsible for maintaining security and safety on campus, as well as reporting all campus emergencies, including medical and criminal, to Campus Police Officers. CSOs are responsible for completing and maintaining reports and assisting students and visitors. CSOs patrol buildings and grounds and completing monthly safety inspections. CSOs are unarmed and non-sworn members of the BSC Campus Police Department.

    CSOs are not required to have prior experience. Training will be provided.

    Position Description & Details


    DUTIES:

    Patrol Operations

    • Provides overall campus security for students, employees, and the public (i.e., performs foot and vehicle patrol of all campus buildings and grounds).
    • Performs building and door checks of all on and off campus buildings at assigned times.
    • Responds to alarms for the College including security, fire and mechanical, and identifies, corrects, and reports conditions to appropriate personnel.
    • Provides security for residence hall students in conjunction with the Director of Student and Residence Life.
    • Provides security for special events as requested by supervisor.
    • Performs other duties as required or assigned to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the campus community. Examples include monthly inspections of fire extinguishers, first aid kits, eye wash and shower stations, emergency lights, AED battery checks.
    • Assist with upkeep and care of patrol office and patrol vehicle.


    Community Oriented Policing

    • Provides safety escorts on campus for employees, students and visitors when requested.
    • Promotes and displays positive behavior and attitude, professionalism towards all BSC staff, students, parents, visitors, outside agencies, and contractors.

    Communications

    • Works closely with the BSC Campus Police Chief and Campus Police Officers.
    • Is aware of procedures to notify Campus Police or Bismarck Police Department of situations regarding security assistance on campus. (i.e., medical emergencies, violent individuals, suspicious activities or persons, and persons who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, etc.)
    • Documents incident reports and distributes to appropriate personnel.
    • Keeps up to date on campus policies, Student Code of Conduct, and Student & Residence
    • Life policies.
    • Assists with reports and various office duties to ensure Campus Police operations run smoothly.
    • Possesses a familiarity of laws, rules and regulations required in statistical record keeping and reporting for required crime and safety reports.

    Requirements of Position

    Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position.

    • Ability to operate a cell phone, two-way-radio, personal computer, telephone, fax machine, and copier. In addition, must be able to operate standard safety equipment used to include chemical agents, tourniquet, flashlight, and duty belt.
    • Other physical demands require good aerobic conditioning, and in some cases, heavy lifting.
    • Ability to read, write, and orally communicate effectively in a clear and concise manner.
    • Demonstrate ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse campus community, and with members/agencies outside the Bismarck State College community.
    Unique working conditions
    • Incumbent may be required to work rotating shifts to include weekends and nights.
    • Must be able to perform security duties and emergency related duties in various environments (indoor, outdoor, inclement weather, and other adverse conditions).
    • May be involved in physical confrontations requiring the use of force from passive restraint up to and including deadly force.
    Other Employment Requirements
    • This position is required to complete First Aid/CPR, AED training.
    • Must participate in required campus trainings.
    • Required to wear uniforms provided by the college while on duty.
    • Ability to work and make decisions with minimal supervision.
