Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Additionally, Small Engine Mechanic relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.     The mechanic is responsible for 1) the repair and maintenance of all small engine equipment and selected motorized equipment utilized primarily within the landscape department, but to include other departments within the Operations Division and Foundation, 2) training landscape staff for the safe and proper operation of equipment, and 3) advising management for budgeting and purchasing of equipment. This equipment includes but is not limited to mowers, garden tractors, edgers, blowers, chainsaws, snow removal equipment, power trimmers, golf carts, ‘Gators’ and similarly powered landscape equipment, including power washers, generators, pumps, tampers, rollers and other small construction machinery may be included. During emergency operations this position may also function as a work leader.

    Essential Functions:

    • Services, repairs, operates and tests Foundation motorized and electric equipment for proper functioning.
    • Repairs and overhauls gasoline/diesel engines and components as well as battery powered equipment.
    • Repairs and overhauls drive train, suspension and steering, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
    • Maintains parts inventory and purchases replacement parts.
    • Trains landscape employees in servicing and safe operation of equipment.
    • Responsible for sharpening or adjusting all types of blades used in landscape equipment.
    • Operates welding equipment.
    • Maintains accurate equipment maintenance records.
    • Performs research and provides input on the purchase of commercial landscape and agricultural equipment and replacement parts.
    • Utilizes computers and e-mail for parts, equipment, and communication.
    • Available 24/7 including weekend, holidays, and evenings for emergency operation.

    Supervision to be Exercised:

    Indirect: Serves as work leader during inclement weather for a group of equipment operators.

    Required and Preferred Education and Experience:

    Required: High school education/G.E.D. plus 4-8 years experience as a small engine mechanic. Requires valid Virginia driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the Foundation indicating a high degree of reliability

    Preferred: Proficient in the use of meters, electronic test and analysis equipment and jacks and related servicing equipment. Ability to read and write at least at high school graduate level and interpret automotive, electrical, and hydraulic schematic diagrams. Have 5 years experience in automotive/small engine repairs at a dealership level or equal. Formal training/experience in gasoline engine maintenance and rebuilding. Experience with Microsoft computer software.

    Qualifications:

    Minimum: Good communication skills, oral and written, plus thorough knowledge of maintenance and repair techniques of all landscape maintenance equipment; ability to (1) safely operate maintenance equipment; (2) perform work on small engines, gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic equipment, engine electrical systems, battery powered equipment, etc.; (3) weld and do body work; (4) read instructions and fill in reports. Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing systems, filing, and records management systems. Perform physical activities that require moving one's whole body, such as in climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, where the activities often also require considerable use of the arms and legs, such as in the physical handling of materials. Be available to work a variable schedule (night/day shifts) weekend and overtime. . Must be able to work on an emergency basis, seven days per week. Be physically qualified to work standing, bending, kneeling, use a crawler, and lift and carry 50 pounds. (Engine mechanic related)
