    SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Kanawha County Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level

    EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310 and KCS G48A.

    JOB SUMMARY: The Principal is the “professional educator who functions as an agent of the county board and has responsibility for the supervision, management and control of a school or schools within the guidelines established by the bounty board. The principal’s major area of responsibility is the general supervision of all the schools and all school activities involving students, teachers and other school personnel.” (Pursuant to WV Code §18A-1-1).

    SUPERVISES: Counselors, teachers, student teachers, secretary, aides, custodians, cooks and volunteers.

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: (In accordance with WV Code §18A-2-9)
    1)Implements a procedure for instructional placement of new enrollees.
    2) Follows the mandated instructional time allocations.
    3) Supports the use of varied instructional strategies.
    4) Encourages the use of instructional technology.
    5) Encourages the use of multiple procedures for the evaluation of student achievement.
    6) Evaluates instructional programs periodically and utilizes results in planning.
    7) Implements a system to monitor student progress.
    8) Assists in supervising the implementation of the Programs of Study, Content Standards and Objectives as well as county and state policies.
    9) Demonstrates knowledge of child growth and development.
    10) Assists in the design and implementation of an effective scheduling procedure.
    11) Informs the community of existing instructional programs and activities.
    12) Works with faculty to plan and implement staff development programs.
    13) Upgrades professional skills annually.
    CURRICULUM:
    1) Recommends alternatives and/or changes needed in curriculum to best meet the needs of students.
    2) Assists in developing guidelines for scheduling students.
    3) Assists in the design and implementation of an effective scheduling procedure.
    4) Assumes special project assignments.
    5) Works with faculty to plan and implement staff development programs.
    6) Manages the special education process.
    7) Works cooperatively with business and industry in establishing and monitoring programs of study.
    8) Works cooperatively with institutions of higher learning in developing and articulating agreements to support career cluster format.
    9) Participates in summer training/staff development and job shadowing in each career cluster.
    10) Stays current with research and development in trends for education and career development locally, nationally and internationally.
    11) Attends special training as needed.
    ADMINISTRATIVE OPERATIONS AND FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
    1) Works a flexible schedule (i.e., daily, yearly).
    2) May serve as principal in the absence of the regular principal.
    3) Demonstrates good judgment and decision making skills.
    4) Interprets and implements board policy.
    5) Provides efficient organization for daily school operations.
    6) Prepares and implements short and long range plans.
    7) Assists in maintaining discipline throughout the student body. Works with staff, students and parents to design and maintain an effective discipline policy.
    8) Administers effective attendance procedures.
    9) Assists in organizing the management of extracurricular activities.
    10) Communicates information, policies, and procedures to students.
    11) Provides parents with regular student progress reports.
    12) Communicates regularly with school support organizations (PAC, PTA, Athletic Boosters, LSIC etc.).
    13) Assists in the supervision of assignments/services provided in the school.
    14) Recognizes student and staff contributions and accomplishments.
    15) Participates with staff in the development of continuing education programs based on school needs.
    16) Provides orientation and support for substitute teachers. Assists the principal in identifying needs for facility improvements.
    17) Encourages staff and students to maintain an attractive environment.
    18) Follows the established evaluation procedures for evaluating all school staff.
    19) Utilizes self-appraisal for the improvement of administrative skills.
    20) Accepts assignments and completes reports.
    21) Assists in the supervision of extra-curricular/after hour school activities.
    22) Accepts other duties as may be assigned.
    18.1 In addition to established laws, policies, rules and regulations, job descriptions for administrators shall include the following responsibilities: 18.1.1 demonstrate instructional leadership to enhance school effectiveness by improving instruction and augmenting student performance. 18.1.2 provides purpose and direction for schools/county, 18.1.3. demonstrates cognitive skills to gather, analyze and synthesize information to reach goals, 18.14 manage group behaviors to achieve consensus,18.15 enhances quality of total school/county organizations, 18.16 organizes and delegates to accomplish goals, 18.17 communicates effectively, and 18.1.8 effective July 1, 2003, provides leadership in the implementation of technology standards.

    QUALIFICATIONS: Meet the qualifications outlined in WV Code §18A-3-2a and §18A-2-9.
    Master's degree;
    Minimum of five (5) years secondary experience;
    Appropriate administrative certificate.

Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
