Police Lieutenant supervises a team of police sergeants and other law enforcement support staff. Responsible for officer assignments, patrol operations, and investigations. Being a Police Lieutenant prepares and reviews reports. Ensures all policies and procedures are followed. Additionally, Police Lieutenant coordinates in-service training, staff performance evaluation and development. Requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or closely related field. Typically reports to a chief of police or police captain. The Police Lieutenant typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Police Lieutenant typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Summary/Objective: 

    Under broad supervision, responsible for supervising the operation of the patrol and security division during routine and emergency conditions. Manages departmental supply and equipment program, including vehicle maintenance and replacement plans. Ensures reports are prepared on all responses to criminal activity or requests for police assistance. Owns assigned tasks. May serve as lead or train staff.

    • Supervises and plans work of assigned staff;
    • Answers alarms and investigates disturbances;
    • Coordinates operational plans with other law enforcement agencies;
    • Manages the Security Management Plan for both the RWS and CS campuses and conducts an annual review of the Plan;
    • Develops and presents educational in-house programs;
    • Maintains security of premises;
    • Oversees inspections of assigned area for fire and/or environmental hazards;
    • Responds to fires, natural disasters, or other hazardous events;
    • Prepares and distributes daily report of activities and irregularities;
    • Develops and prepares monthly staffing schedules;
    • Develops security staffing, shift and contingency plans

    Supervisory Responsibility:

    This position directly supervises six staff.  This position will oversee the daily operations of the RWS/CSC including the services provided to students. 

     

    Work Environment:

    This role requires the ability to be reactive emergency, natural or man-made disaster, and routine peace keeping environments with travel from site to site. The position is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions; occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration; potentially hostile environments; extensive public contact. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be very loud due to sirens, firearm training, etc.

     

    Physical Demands:

    Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in a law enforcement setting and an office setting; restrain or subdue individuals; walk, stand, sit, or run for prolonged periods of time; occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; occasionally climb and balance; regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry light to moderate weights; frequently lift and/or move moderate to heavy weights; occasionally lift and/or move heavy weights; operate office equipment including use of computer keyboard; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and fingers; ability to speak and hear to exchange information; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various locations; ability to operate and use specialized law enforcement tools and equipment including guns and handcuffs.  See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

     

    Working Conditions:

    Incumbents working in this job perform duties in an office setting. This is a 40-hour workweek requirement. The position may involve managing a high-volume workload and demands a high level of accuracy while working with deadlines.     Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

    This is a full-time position. This position requires working in various shifts, including evenings and weekends. This position may occasionally require longer hours and weekend work.

     

    Travel:

    Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

    Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university, Georgia P.O.S.T. certification and one (1) year of experience at the lower level Facilities Police Sergeant (PST071) or position equivalent; or Georgia P.O.S.T. certification and one (1) year of full-time supervisory experience in law enforcement or security equivalent to Facilities Police Sergeant (PST071) AND Georgia P.O.S.T. certification.
