Patient Safety Manager manages a staff responsible for developing and implementing patient safety programs. Supervises the investigation of errors and then plans for resolution of all safety related incidents, including those involving employees, visitors, patients, and situations posing a threat to the hospital's buildings and equipment. Being a Patient Safety Manager maintains records of patient-related errors and evaluates this information in order to identify the cause of the error. Collects, reviews, and analyzes information from the facility's safety programs to identify corrective action and programs as necessary. Additionally, Patient Safety Manager recommends changes, policies, or programs that could prevent future errors. Designs and presents training programs meant to increase awareness of patient safety initiatives. Ensures compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Patient Safety Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes. To be a Patient Safety Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 to 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Role Purpose

    This position manages the patient safety and clinical risk management programs and has responsibility for the program at one HSO, facility, or Program. Provides guidance to HSO staff responsible for developing and implementing patient safety & clinical risk management programs. This leader supports staff in the investigation of errors, plans for the resolution of all patient safety related incidents and identifies and prevents potential issues that could compromise patient care or result in risk to the organization. Partners with patient safety and clinical risk management program manager and other system safety and risk management leaders to implement and maintain standardized processes and tools. Also ensures appropriate communication and information exchange with local teams.

     

    Responsibilities

  • Ensures execution of standardized patient safety/ risk management programs and processes, including oversight for patient safety and risk management education, event reporting, event management/ follow up, and escalation of Serious events.
  • Oversight of risk management loss prevention activities, including acting as a resource for handling risk related issues and concerns. Also provides support for the claims and litigation process through resolution.
  • Applies principles of patient safety, high reliability, performance improvement and human factors to manage and lead cultural transformation and standardization of the BJC patient safety and risk management programs.
  • Collaborates with Subject Matter Experts, System Committees/Groups, BJC Shared Services, HSO leadership to manage, design, problem solve and complete the standardized patient safety transformational program and implementation throughout BJC and then support ongoing efforts.
  • Provides proactive and ongoing communication with team members, leaders and providers at all levels of the HSO to ensure transparency of patient safety and risk mitigation efforts. Supports the team in assessing the patient safety program and ensuring proactive actions to efficiently gain, regain or sustain safety.
  • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: onboarding and hiring, training, workload management & performance evaluations, conducting professional development plans as needed. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
  • Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
