    DEPARTMENT: CORONER


    SUMMARY: THIS WILL BE A PART-TIME POSITION WORKING 16-20 HOURS A WEEK. THIS IS A WEEKEND POSITION WORKING 8-10 HOURS ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.

    The Morgue Attendant is primary responsible for the overall management of the AnMed Health Morgue under the auspices of the Coroner. The Morgue Attendant provides proactive and extensive solutions to ensure a stable morgue and the preservation of deceased individuals.

    The Morgue Attendant will be responsible for handling deceased individuals that fall under the authority of the Anderson County Office of the Coroner and AnMed Health Medical Center. He/she will be responsible for review and completion all necessary documentation and paperwork in coordination with the investigating Coroner/Deputy Coroner and AnMed Health Medical Center.

    He/she will be responsible for confirming identification of the deceased individual, accepting remains into the morgue and releasing remains as appropriate.

    He/she is responsible for ensuring that the morgue is appropriately supplied with supplies and equipment to perform autopsies and conduct death investigations. He/she may be required to collect blood and/or tissue specimens and photographs on deceased individuals admitted to the morgue.

    He/she is also responsible for assisting the Pathologist with various tasks during the autopsy and ensuring that the human remains are prepared for release to the appropriate authority.

    He/she will be responsible for assisting Coroner/Deputy Coroner with various aspects of death investigation when requested.


    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


      Obtained a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent.

      Have not been convicted of a felony offense or any offense involving moral turpitude contrary to the laws of this State, any other state, or the United States.

      Knowledge of South Carolina Statues relating to the function, jurisdiction, and authority of the Coroner’s Office.

      Knowledge of rules of evidence and standard techniques for gathering and preserving physical evidence.

      Knowledge of basic anatomy and medical terminology.

      Knowledge of medical and laboratory procedures related to death investigation.

      Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and Coroner’s Office policies/procedures and laws.

      Ability to accurately observe and record information relating to deaths and autopsies.

      Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public and other governmental agencies in situations that are highly stressful.

      Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with department personnel, hospital staff, law enforcement agencies, other coroner’s offices, medical offices, and others.

      Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with persons in situations that are often highly stressful.

      Ability to write clear and concise reports, and correspondence and maintain accurate records.

      Ability to analyze and interpret medical and other technical reports relating to investigations and assess them for completeness and accuracy

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:


      Minimum one (1) year of experience as an EMT, Pathology Specialist, Medical Laboratory Technician, preferred.

      Medicolegal Death Investigation Training, Medical Training, Pharmacology, Photographer, Evidence Preservation, etc., preferred; or

      Any equivalent combination of training and experience to meet the qualifications of the position.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

      Current South Carolina Driver’s License.
      Must meet requirements for NCIC Certification
      Additional certifications may be added at the discretion of the Coroner.
