Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Job Description The Medical Interpreter is responsible for facilitating communication, through accurate and complete interpretation services, between University Health clinical/non-clinical personnel and Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients/patients’ families, in order to ensure culturally responsive and equitable care. High school diploma or equivalent Six months experience working in a role requiring medical interpretation Strong written and verbal communication skills Complete fluency in language(s) for which hired, demonstrated by passing competency exam with a minimum score of 85%, bilingual interview process and role playing Bridging the Gap, JCCC, SBA or equivalent required National certification preferred Language Access PRN Requirements Must be available to work a minimum of 8 shifts per one month scheduling cycle, to include one weekend, 2nd or 3rd shift, where applicable. Must obtain scheduling supervisor or management approval prior to requesting another PRN employee to work a scheduled shift. Holidays: Must work a minimum of one shift per calendar year from each Holiday Category as outlined below. Category 1: New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day Category 2: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day Working at University Health is about making a difference.
