Legal Services Director oversees the activities of the organization's legal department. Provides legal advice, interpretation, and guidance to senior management and officers regarding contracts, state/federal regulatory requirements, intellectual property or trademark protection, and other business matters. Being a Legal Services Director reviews all information and prepares defense for any legal actions against the organization or advises on prosecuting lawsuits on behalf of the organization. Coordinates and reviews the work of internal or external legal staff. Additionally, Legal Services Director manages staff of attorneys. Requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Requires admittance to a state bar. Typically reports to top management. The Legal Services Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Legal Services Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     The Legal Director is responsible for the strategy and leadership of legal services and programs provided by the organization. This person will assist the CEO to achieve established goals and execute the mission of MLFA.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    The following reflects the essential duties for this job but does not restrict the tasks that may be assigned. Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities of this job at any time. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodations.

    • Day-to-day leadership and oversight of the legal work on the Legal Division’s docket, including oversight of case assignments and case flow
    • Support attorneys in developing new advocacy, including litigation, with consideration of strategic impact, organizational needs, and relevant ethical considerations
    • Review and approve any co-counsel agreements on behalf of the organization
    • Serve as an ambassador and represent the organization positively in the community
    • Oversee the development and implementation of ethical and professional legal practices, procedures, and systems
    • Identify, communicate, and escalate issues to the CEO and Board of Directors in a timely manner
    • Partner with the CEO and executive team in developing and managing the annual budget and strategic planning
    • Assist with the recruitment and training of new staff
    • Monitor employee performance; provide coaching and performance feedback as needed
    • Establish program benchmarks and recommend improvements; develop standards for reporting, accountability, and measuring success; and make program recommendations to the CEO
    • Plan and conduct regular staff meetings
    • Support the CEO with operational tasks as requested
    • Ensure work duties are being performed in accordance with safety and security policies and applicable state and federal regulations
    • Represent MLFA’s mission and values on a daily basis

    EXPERIENCE – EDUCATION

    • JD degree from an accredited university
    • Licensed in any state
    • Minimum of 10 years of progressive attorney experience
    • Specialization in immigration, civil, and or criminal law litigation
    • Advanced legal research and writing skills
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in nonprofit management preferred
    • ·Experience working with marginalized or impacted communities, grassroots organizations, and non-governmental organizations
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe
