Laboratory Supervisor

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
This position supervises and performs a variety of chemical, biological, and microbiological tests designed to produce safe operation of domestic and commercial drinking water and waste treatment and serves as back up Operator in Charge (ORC) for the Water Reclamation Facility. Work includes establishing work schedules and timetables, troubleshooting process problems, conducting complex laboratory procedures, coordinating with other staff to schedule contractor analysis of industrial wastewater, preparing necessary reports and maintenance of computerized and manual records and files.
This position reports to the Water Reclamation Facility Manager. Supervisor is exercised over subordinate personnel.
A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS:

Oversees the day-to-day operations of the wastewater lab; supervises and performs a variety of complex laboratory tests including tests requiring operation of atomic absorption equipment.

Performs a variety of analyses for process control; supervises and performs tests to determine power of hydrogen (ph), alkalinity, biological oxygen demand, total solids, volatile solids, settable solids, fecal coliform, metals, and other tests; supervises and prepares solutions and reagents.

Coordinates with the Pretreatment Coordinator and other plant personnel to perform analysis and schedule subcontracted analysis of industrial wastewater.

Interprets laboratory tests and prepares required reports; operates a microcomputer to analyze and track test results.

Supervises the maintenance of an inventory of chemicals, solutions, culture media, required forms, and other laboratory supplies; works with Plant Manager on budgetary needs.

Performs quality control program on equipment and supplies to assure reliable test results; maintains laboratory equipment in proper operating order; maintains state laboratory certification.

Consults with, informs, and advises plant personnel about controls to be used, defects found, or changes in treatment process.

Participates in the hiring and performance evaluation of laboratory staff; performs training, scheduling, and performance coaching.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
Position requires an Associate’s degree and 3-5 Years of experience (considerable), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Thorough knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, materials, and equipment, including those used in complex chemical and biochemical analysis of drinking water and wastewater.

Thorough knowledge of the principles of organic and inorganic chemistry.

Thorough knowledge of drinking water quality issues.

Considerable knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and permitting requirements.

Computer skills for research, reports, files management and record-keeping.

Ability to read and interpret technical federal guidelines on wastewater treatment procedures and tests and industrial pretreatment program requirements.

Ability to interpret Town ordinances and state regulations related to water and wastewater treatment and industrial pretreatment.

Ability to prepare laboratory reagents and assemble laboratory apparatus for chemical and biological analysis.

Ability to take water and sewage samples and perform certified analysis.

Ability to prepare and keep accurate records and prepare reports.

Ability to train and supervise subordinate laboratory personnel.

Ability to supervise, train, review coach and motivate employees; understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform mathematical calculations.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with industrial officials, regulatory officials, Town staff, and contracting agencies.
