  • Summary Statement

    Entry level mechanic reporting to a technical supervisor. Assignments require evaluation and analysis and are carried out in accordance with standard trade practices. This level diagnoses and trouble-shoots equipment malfunctions, makes determinations of problems and effectively repairs a variety of vehicles and equipment, which may be unique to the agency, including pick-up trucks with diesel engines; small tools, 2-stroke engines and equipment including chain saws, lawn mowers, weed eaters; as well as heavy duty diesel trucks and equipment with air brakes and hydraulic systems. This position is required to work overtime as needed, and during storm events and other emergency events on short notice, and in some cases, no advance notice.

    Essential Functions

    Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Performs preventive maintenance to include lubricating, cleaning, servicing, inspecting, and testing equipment. � Uses manual and computerized diagnostic equipment to evaluate, troubleshoot, make adjustments and diagnose equipment malfunctions or defects.� Repairs/replaces various parts and assemblies using mechanic power and hand tools. � Interprets schematics and blue prints to perform inspections, diagnosis, wiring procedures, and maintenance of mechanical, hydraulic, ignition, lighting, warning, and injection assemblies and component systems.� Operates computers, interprets parts, service, and automated equipment management system/ manuals to perform research, order parts, prepare records, and analyze equipment malfunctions.� Fabricates parts, performs gas/electric welding and makes body repairs.� Responds to road service requests and/or assists with tow trucks/wreckers. � Conducts road test/operational checks for diagnostic purposes to determine equipment deficiencies and for post-maintenance tests.� Cleans and cares for tools, equipment and shop facilities.� Follows safety rules and practices, and complies with Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA) standards in the performance of duties.

    Job Requirements for Equipment Mechanic I� Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: Knowledge of operating diagnostic equipment used for inspecting and testing equipment for vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of diagnosing and repairing routine malfunctions on light duty vehicles such as pickup trucks, sedans or vans. Knowledge of preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment which includes lubricating, cleaning, and servicing. Knowledge of math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals. Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving). Job Requirements for Equipment Mechanic II Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: Six months' experience in diagnosing and repairing routine malfunctions on light duty vehicles such as pickup trucks, sedans or vans. Six months' experience in performing routine engine tune-up on light duty engines/ system components such as replacing spark plugs, engine timing, pollution control systems, and fuel systems. Knowledge of minor body repair. Knowledge of welding. Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
