    The Job: The Exhibit Engineer is responsible for performing advanced troubleshooting and maintenance of exhibit elements in coordination with the Exhibit Technical staff.

    Responsibilities

    • Coordinate with Exhibit Technicians, Electronic Technicians, Exhibit Engineers, and other internal partners to facilitate completion of assigned projects, initiatives, and exhibit upgrades
    • Configure, upgrade, and maintain show control, projection, audio, lighting, show automation, industrial control and auxiliary systems.
    • Troubleshoot and repair exhibit interactive failures
    • Design, assemble and install custom control units for interactive exhibits
    • Ability to work with PLC's, Arduino's, and microcontrollers
    • Research and acquire new technology for Museum applications
    • Build, wire and integrate custom equipment racks for exhibit gallery control rooms
    • Research, evaluate, and make recommendations for equipment or software upgrades
    • Install, configure, and assist in the commissioning of new equipment
    • Solicit quotations for equipment, software and determine labor-hours required for exhibit upgrades and new exhibit development
    • Specify electronic, mechanical, and electrical equipment both “off the shelf” and custom designed to be used in new exhibits and exhibit upgrades
    • Technically document all research, testing, setup/configuration and assist with end user training
    • Design custom computer programs and supervise installation for interactive exhibit units
    • Maintain an organized back of house and front of house equipment inventory
    • Review and approve schematics and other documents related to the construction of new exhibits, verifying that it meets current Museum standards
    • Local travel as needed to fabricators shop to inspect fabrication status of exhibits, verify that items are being built to specification
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of five (5) years related experience designing, developing, and troubleshooting electronic equipment and industrial controls both off-the-shelf and purpose-built
    • Experience with AV equipment or technical show equipment, such as lighting, audio, video, multimedia playback, networking, and show automation
    • Bachelors’ degree a plus
    • Strong collaborator and communicator who works well independently or on team projects
    • High level of initiative and exceptional problem-solving skills
    • Creative approach to problem-solving with the ability to focus on details while maintaining the “big picture” view. Ability to ideate multiple technical and creative approaches and solutions to meet design criteria
    • Electrical and electronics assembly and repair proficiencies including pulling and terminating wire, soldering, connecting sensors and other control components, rack and cabinet assembly
    • Must be able to provide an accident-free learning environment for our visitors and a safe and healthy work environment for our employees by complying with all pertinent and applicable safety regulations that support the Museum’s safety regulations that support the Museum’s Safety and Health Program
    • Be stewards for overall world-class quality of the guest experience
    • Language:
      • Ability to interpret various technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
      • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
      • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the organization
    • Mathematical:
      • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, area, circumference, and volume
      • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
    • Reasoning:
      • Demonstrated skills in defining problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
      • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
    • Physical:
      • The employee occasionally is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell
      • The employee is frequently required to sit, talk or hear;
      • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
      • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
    • Work Environment:
      • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts
      • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; and vibration
      • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
