Job Description
The Night Shift Manager at a steel mill is responsible for overseeing all operations during the night shift, ensuring production targets are met while maintaining strict safety and quality standards. The role requires a strong leader who can manage personnel, troubleshoot issues, and ensure the seamless continuation of steel production processes through the night.
Qualifications
Pay: $60,000-$70,000
Key Responsibilities:
1. Safety Compliance

Ensure all workers follow safety procedures, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and adhere to steel mill safety standards.

Perform regular safety inspections and identify potential hazards. Act immediately to rectify unsafe conditions.

Lead incident investigations, prepare reports, and develop corrective actions in case of accidents or safety breaches.
2. Operational Leadership

Oversee steel transfer from the mill to appropriate storage yards during the night shift, ensuring efficiency, productivity, and quality control.

Ensure all operations are in compliance with company policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Monitor equipment performance and make immediate decisions in the event of malfunctions or production issues.
3. Personnel Management

Supervise, guide, and support the night shift team, including operators, maintenance staff, and support roles.

Allocate work assignments, monitor performance, and provide training where necessary to ensure productivity and compliance with safety protocols.

Conduct shift handovers with day shift managers to communicate ongoing tasks, production updates, and critical issues.
4. Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting

Address any mechanical, operational, or personnel issues that arise during the shift to minimize downtime.

Work closely with maintenance and engineering teams to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, ensuring repairs are completed quickly to minimize disruption.
5. Production Monitoring

Ensure that production schedules are followed and targets are met in line with customer specifications.

Implement continuous improvement practices to increase productivity and reduce waste.
6. Emergency Response

Serve as the key point of contact for any emergencies or incidents during the night shift, coordinating responses in line with safety protocols.

Communicate any critical issues that arise during the shift to management for proper escalation.
7. Communication & Reporting
-
Prepare detailed shift reports to document production output, equipment performance, incidents, safety violations, and any corrective actions taken.

Provide updates to the day shift manager to ensure smooth transitions between shifts.
Qualifications:

Experience: 5 years of experience in steel mill operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role, preferably during night shifts.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree in engineering, industrial management, or a related field is preferred.

Technical Skills:

Strong understanding of steel production processes (e.g., blast furnaces, electric arc furnaces, rolling mills, etc.).

Knowledge of industrial equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.

Proficiency in safety regulations, especially related to steel mill operations.

Leadership Skills:

Ability to lead a team, delegate tasks, and maintain high productivity levels.

Conflict resolution and ability to motivate staff.

Problem-Solving: Strong decision-making abilities and resourcefulness in addressing operational challenges.

Communication Skills: Clear communication skills, both written and verbal, for shift reporting and team coordination.

Computer Skills: Familiarity with production monitoring software, MS Office, and reporting tools.
Physical Requirements:

Ability to work in a heavy industrial environment, including exposure to heat, noise, and heavy machinery.

Capable of lifting heavy objects, standing for extended periods, and handling physically demanding tasks as needed.
