    Summary

    The Data Science Engineering Manager is critical to enabling the Artificial Intelligence (AI) vision for the company and deploying AI solutions that transform how we operate and make decisions. The Engineering Manager leads the data and software engineering portfolio of work supporting all solutions delivered by the Data Science team. The role is a leadership position directing a team of Data and Software Engineers who partner with the Data Scientists and Product Managers to build and deploy solutions. As a key leader on the Data Science team, the Engineering Manager shapes the policies and processes guiding the planning and execution of work.

    Key Responsibilities

    Vision and Strategy


    • Accountable for leading the execution of the Engineering portfolio of work that impacts solutions supporting global business unit results and organizational strategy.
    • Set direction on the technical architecture, patterns, and practices used by the team and ensure alignment with department principles, policies, and standards.
    • Partner with Data Science Product Managers, Data Scientists, and business sponsors to explore data and software products supporting AI solutions. Identify data sources that support near-term and long-term use cases.
    • Prioritize use cases based on their long-term ability to provide value with incremental releases. Identify business outcome metrics to measure each product’s success.
    • Develop a multi-quarter product roadmap that articulates a clear vision and strategy for data and software supporting AI solutions. Periodically assess the execution of the roadmap and drive improvements.
    • Communicate the roadmap and vision with stakeholders building support and advocacy for the work.


    Development


    • Manage the design, build, deployment, and operation of data and software solutions and their underlying platforms. Oversee the development of software solutions used to capture data input and deliver AI-driven insights.
    • Ensure a high-quality architecture for structured and unstructured data originating from internal and external sources using consistent patterns and practices.
    • Proactively prioritize and manage the backlog for all products within the Engineering portfolio ensuring work is appropriately sized to be completed on-time.
    • Manage the Engineering team’s resource allocation in collaboration with the other team leaders.
    • Manage the capture and documentation of product requirements from stakeholders, including new features and enhancements. Regularly obtain feedback from business owners and stakeholders to confirm requirements are being met prior to deployment.
    • Assist Engineers with setting priorities, making decisions, and removing roadblocks.
    • Oversee the execution of testing and production releases with all contributors and stakeholders.
    • Setup the support process for each product aligned to the overall support strategy, including issue management and escalation.
    • Support the team and business owners during the initial go-live and provide leadership and focus on deployment issues or defects.
    • Ensure product performance is proactively managed and performance issues are addressed in a timely manner.


    Leadership


    • Lead all Engineering activities for products covering multiple business disciplines.
    • Plan, direct, and monitor activities of individual contributors and/or contingent workforce. Apply strong subject matter knowledge to manage staff activities in solving complex business and technical issues within established principles, policies, and standards.
    • Understand, articulate, and optimize solutions, processes, and procedures used by the team and stakeholders.
    • Develop and present analyses to management (e.g., organizational, systems, feasibility, cost/benefit studies, implementation plans). Identify budget requirements to successfully carry out the product portfolio.
    • Partner with Procurement to evaluate and negotiate third party solutions and services.
    • Ensure team meets or enables achievement of relevant metrics and commitments defined through clear objectives and goals.
    • Exert influence beyond the immediate team. Demonstrate business acumen and apply it for effective business engagement and alignment with internal customers.
    • Drive change management in the team and the department demonstrating personal ownership and support of changes.


    Typical Education


    • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4 year college or university


    Relevant Experience

  • 8 years related experience and/or training
  • Experience in product management with demonstrated ability to managing all aspects of a successful product throughout its lifecycle.
  • Strong technical background in data engineering, cloud services, and MLOps with a solid understanding and/or hands-on experience in software development.
  • Experience with the following technologies and languages: Azure (Data Factory, Data Lake Storage Gen 2, SQL Server, Functions, Logic App, Stream Analytics, DevOps including CI/CD pipelines, and Storage Explorer), Databricks, Git, Visual Studio, PowerBI, PowerApps, Terraform, and Python.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a drive to reach resolutions acceptable to multiple stakeholders.
  • Skilled at working effectively with cross-functional teams in a matrix organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of AI and machine learning technologies and their application in business.
  • Understanding of data management techniques, especially improving data quality.
  • Travel may be periodically required (<25%) to meet with internal customers and attend conferences.
