Credit Specialist

Position Summary:
The Credit Specialist role is a pertinent position within the credit union to ensure we are helping to educate, guide and resolve credit issues that our members are facing. This role is responsible for analyzing personal finances and credit to help identify areas of improvement and to help set the member up for long-term success. This role is dually responsible for utilizing innovative technologies to provide information on credit union products and services, adhering to all credit union policies and procedures and Federal and State rules and regulations. In addition, the selected individual will be responsible for reviewing denied loan applications to better assist and educate our members with credit-specific challenges, electronically and verbally interviewing and evaluating applicants for more in-depth loan productions and applications, processing consumer loan applications, gathering background information and assess loan applicants’ credit history. Approve or deny loan applications based on analysis. Operate with moderate credit authority. The primary focus of loan volume is expected to be generated from denied loan applications, borrowers with more credit intricacies, and members that need assistance with navigating credit improvement strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Evaluating members’ financial status and identifying areas for improvement.
2. Educating our members in various aspects of financial literacy and financial improvement.
3. Helping to develop effective financial strategies and plans for members based on their needs and long / short term goals.
4. Providing members with information about various financial products and services.
5. Assisting members in managing their debts and helping them to budget effectively.
6. Monitoring financial market trends to ensure that plans are effective and to identify any necessary updates.
7. Helping members make informed decisions about their overall credit profile and other financial matters related to bettering their financial positioning.
13. Discuss credit challenges, credit improvement(s), credit counseling options and any other beneficial credit communication needed to ensure member success.
14. Assist members with the loan application process to ensure completeness of information.
15. Pull credit reports for all accounts, verify debts, and estimate monthly payments for any outstanding debts not listed and add them to debts on application.
16. Calculate debt-to-income ratios for loan applicants.
17. Conduct a complete and holistic analysis of the bureau.
18. Identify collateral needs and payment plans for members applying for loans.
19. Identify eligibility of loan co-maker from co-maker’s statement and credit rating.
20. When a loan is denied, explain reasons for denial in a professional, courteous manner. Work with members to provide recommendations or alternative options for other possible ways to secure a loan in the future.
21. Verify the accuracy of loan amounts and repayment terms on approved loan applications.
22. Complete loan documents and disburse loans when approved.
23. Implement new loan products and services in accordance with management direction.
24. Cross-sell lending and other credit union products, as needed and as available.
25. Resolves member issues/problems, provides professional responses to member inquiries and consistently demonstrates first-hand resolution.
26. Educates members as to the use of available automated systems in order and sets them up for these services, including online banking, e-statements and other electronic communication tools that are or may be offered in the future.
27. There will be ongoing training that is required for this role.
28. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
1.High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of one year of customer service or sales experience preferably within a financial institution. A combination of education and experience will also be considered.
2. A minimum of 3 years of underwriting.
3. Demonstrated ability to understand and explain credit bureau reports, liaise with members in satisfying loan stipulations, schedule closings and process loan documents.
4. Demonstrated ability in understanding and recommending appropriate deposit and loan products based on member need.
5. Demonstrated ability in providing excellent customer service.
6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, problem solving skills, organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
7. A Certified Credit Counselor or the ability to obtain the Certified Credit Counselor certification.
8. Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in various situations while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality.
9. Must have or be able to attain National Mortgage Licensing System registration (NMLS#).
10. Must have a thorough understanding of company policies and procedures as they relate to this position.
11. Must understand and comply with all job-related state and federal laws and regulations.
