Being a Correctional Officer oversees prisoner conduct and safety. Supervises prisoners during meals, recreation, work and other daily activities. Additionally, Correctional Officer documents violations and takes appropriate disciplinary actions. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Correctional Officer possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. Works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.     Position Summary:

    This is full performance corrections work enforcing designated laws, rules, and regulations in a corrections facility and providing functional supervision to lower level Corrections Officers. Incumbent in this class is responsible for controlling inmates living, work or recreational areas on a specific post in corrections institution and providing functional supervision to lower level Corrections Officers assigned to the post. Incumbent may serve as a member of a unit team providing input into the rehabilitation of members within the unit. incumbent in this class is certified Corrections Officer and exercise delegated statutory powers.

    The position requires strong problem solving skills; good oral and written communication skills; effective conflict management skills; ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships and effective customer service skills; ability to adapt to new situations and/or changes. The incumbent must be capable of performing established Essential Physical Functions. An initial 6-month probationary period is required for new promoted employees.

    Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

    • As second officer supervises, maintains discipline and control of inmates in their living quarters, at meals, in classrooms, in the hospital, kitchen and bathing areas; while they are segregated for punitive protective and administrative purposes; while they are on work details (inside and outside)
    • Searches inmates at their work, recreation, in the infirmary, while in food service and in their housing units to prevent the secreting of contraband and fabrication of lethal weapons, by physical pat down in either standing prone position
    • Shakes down physical areas of the facility as directed or upon own initiative in order to prevent and control the secreting of contraband in living units, stairways, work areas, recreation areas

    Qualifications

    • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Must meet all minimum qualifications and necessary special requirements for COI (A). In addition, a minimum of one year of relevant experience in the field of corrections or in the detention of convicted offenders; and have successfully completed the Corrections Officer Training (COTP). At the discretion of the agency, relevant collegecoursework or completion of corrections officer training in another jurisdiction may be substituted for some or all of the required COTP.
    • Minimum Competencies:
    • Applicant will be able to interact with co-workers, inmates, and outside personnel to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Applicant selected will have strong organizational skills and function with minimal supervision and direction.
    • Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:

    · Must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services. Must pass a physical exam, background investigation and submit a State of Kansas Tax Clearance.
