    Job Summary:

    JOB SUMMARY

    This position is with the Halasa/Chappell Lab, jointly led by Drs Natasha Halasa and Jim Chappell, within the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Our laboratory research concentrates on the etiology, epidemiology, prevention, and pathobiology of infectious diseases.

    This position will, under moderate supervision, manage the data functions and assist in other research functions. Ensures the integrity and quality of clinical research is maintained. Assist with data-related tasks like the collection and input of assessment tool data, tracking of clinical trial data, cleaning and mining for data. This position will also be responsible for reporting data activities, summarizing, and presenting clinical data internally and externally.

    SKILLS NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS

    • Database Knowledge: Knowledge and understanding of a database and how data is organized so that its contents can easily be accessed, managed, and updated.

    • Data Collection: Able to clearly define the goals and objectives of the data collection task. Demonstrates the ability to collect data critical to the preparation of proposals, the accomplishment of interviews, and client, vendor and team requirements. Successfully performs a basic data collection process within the context of assignments. Helps prepare surveys and questionnaires. Has conducted simple face-to-face and/or telephone interview surveys.

    • Data Entry: The ability to transcribe information from the original source into an electronic system according to written and verbal instructions efficiently and accurately.

    • Data Analysis: The ability to analyze data in an accurate manner.

    • Clinical Research: Can research problems that span several areas of the department. Develops and writes basic trial protocols. Knows what information is available in the company. Designs data collection forms. Has developed networking skills which assist in researching issues.

    • Analysis: Capable of reducing quantitative and conceptual problems and situations to basic elements and parts, then classifying, evaluating, and drawing conclusions. Demonstrates the ability to sift through data to determine its most significant elements. Able to turn discrete data into meaningful and valuable information which contributes to the successful completion of job assignments. Clearly recognizes cause and effect relationships.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Database Tool Development

    • Develop forms and questionnaires to collect the appropriate data

    • Use Excel and REDCap to assist in data collection efforts, database development, and descriptive data analysis.

    Data Cleaning and Analysis

    • Collect, organize, and evaluate data from a variety of sources including the electronic health record and interviews with study subjects using quantitative approaches.

    • Queries research team to clarify, reconcile and complete data issues. Identifies and resolves discrepancies per protocol.

    • Use Excel, R, STATA and other tools to manipulate, clean, and run data analyses under the guidance of the PI, biostatisticians, and other data team members.

    Data Reports and Presentations

    • Reports metrics from given study load, including timeliness of entry and outstanding data.

    • Help with the preparation of talks and presentation materials including PowerPoint slides, tables, figures, and posters.

    • Conduct analysis and write reports summarizing progress, trends, and conclusions related to research and projects and activities.

    • Present study concepts and synthesized progress in group settings.

    • Edit, prepare, and submit formal research reports and manuscripts for publication in journals and conferences.

    Data Training & Project Management

    • Perform literature reviews; Retrieve journal articles; Maintain a bibliographic library of supporting material; Stay abreast of trends in clinical informatics.

    • Project coordination tasks, including managing project timelines and meeting deadlines; keeping data projects on track.

    • Supports day-to-day activities of the team.
