Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences assists Dean with the management of administrative functions of the college of Arts and Sciences. Collaborates with Dean on planning college strategic initiatives and supports on college fundraising. Being an Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences provides administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Typically requires an advanced degree. Additionally, Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences typically reports to a Dean. The Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     The Jaeger lab at Emory University https://scholarblogs.emory.edu/jaegerlab/ is looking to recruit a staff scientist to work on our NIH funded project in studying the cell-type specific function of motor and premotor cortex in mice.  The technical approaches will include mouse behavioral training and behavior analysis, optogenetics, silicon probe extracellular electrophysiology, and voltage imaging. A specific objective is to compare normal and Parkinsonian cortical function.  The successful candidates will have prior expertise in rodent neurophysiology and a strong background in data analysis.  Emory University provides a vibrant and supportive environment for postdoctoral training including grant writing workshops and teaching opportunities, as well as strong training in movement disorders.  The Atlanta location allows for affordable living conditions in a cosmopolitan setting with a world class airport.

     

    The Associate Academic Research Scientist performs a wide range of highly technical and complex research duties and has documented scientific achievements and increasing technical, management, leadership, and professional expertise necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs.

     

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Demonstrated knowledge of research and experimental platforms for analyzing, design and interpreting results Investigates and recommends potential alternative approaches to improve the quality of results of basic and/or translational research.
    • Demonstrates increased responsibility through management of teams and leadership of scientific projects by applying advanced knowledge, skills, and input necessary for protocol development, as well as facilitating in some training aspects of other team members.
    • Aids in writing IACUC, IRB, Biosafety and other approval documents.
    • Oversees quality assurance of research conducted by other team members.
    • May assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, or with approval of the responsible faculty director, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific areas of instrumentation or methodology development and user support.
    • With the approval of the responsible faculty director, may be principal investigators on funded proposals.
    • Performs other responsibilities as required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • PhD or MD and five years of professional level experience OR Master's degree and ten years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab.
    • Laboratory experience will be based on area of assignment.
    • Internship experience or experience prior to attaining the qualifying degree is not considered eligible work experience for this job classification.
    • NOTE: Applicants applying with a M.D. or equivalent degree must be eligible for a Georgia medical license to meet the minimum qualifications.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Be able to carry out a research project on the cell-type specific function of motor and premotor cortex in behaving mice.
    • Requires mouse surgery skills, electrophysiological skills in behaving animals, mouse behavioral training skills.
    • Data analysis skills (Matlab and/or Python coding, signal processing).
    • Writing and Mentoring skills
    • Supervisory Experience Required
