The Scarborough Land Trust conserves land for people, for wildlife-forever. We are a private, non-profit, community- based organization. Our mission is to conserve land where natural resources, scenic vistas and historical significance offer unique value to our community. To date, we have protected more than 1,400 acres in Scarborough for public benefit. At over 50 square miles, Scarborough is one of the largest towns in southern Maine. It is also one of the fastest growing towns in state. Scarborough has exceptional natural resources, from the state's largest salt marsh (Scarborough Marsh), to 8 miles of coastline, 4 public beaches, 5 rivers that meander through town, and vast acres of prime farmland and mature forests. Flowing from west to east through almost the entire length of town, the Nonesuch River is the largest source of fresh water for the Scarborough Marsh. Founded in 1977 as the Owascoag Land Conservation Trust (Owascoag is the Native American name for "the land of many grasses"), we were later renamed Scarborough Land Trust to reflect the rich diversity of Scarborough's natural resources. SLT has a small staff, an active Board of Directors, and many volunteers. We work with many partners to conserve land in Scarborough, and rely on financial contributions from both year-round and summer residents. SLT has worked successfully with both landowners and developers to preserve land. The Trust educates people about land conservation and works with anyone wishing to protect land. Supporting SLT is one way to promote land conservation in Scarborough. All current contributors are considered members of SLT.
