The company was the brainchild of Douglas Fish, who started MyPersonal with his colleague Barak Carmon, after undergoing a very personally trying experience. A couple of years ago, Douglas learned that his father needed to undergo surgery to minimize the effects of Parkinson's disease. To learn how to best support his dad and family, Douglas, who was an early adopter and investor in the Internet, turned to the Web as one of his major resources. While Douglas was able to amass a great amount of useful information, he discovered that all of the sites were static and provided no opportunities for people with shared interests and concerns to interact with one another. More than anything he wanted to communicate with others to see how they were coping with the disease themselves or how they were helping ailing family members fight the disease. He wanted to learn about the disease and surgery from people who had relevant knowledge, so that he could better understand the surgery's procedures and its possible effects. Unfortunately, none of the sites provided him with an opportunity to connect with others; there was no sense of community. Because of this experience, Douglas determined that he was going to start a company that worked with affinity groups, organizations whose members have a shared focus and intensity, to help them create comprehensive portals that not only offer content and commerce but also the community components that he had found generally lacking.
