NewDay has provided chaplains in the Tarrant County Juvenile Justice Center since 2000. Detainment is a sobering experience as juveniles face the consequences of their unwise choices. About 700 children are referred to the Juvenile Justice Center in Tarrant County yearly, with 50 to 70 juveniles in detention each week. For many, this is their first introduction to the criminal justice system. NewDay Services offers tools that will enable them to take positive control of their lives. We provide instruction at the Juvenile Center called "Life Building Classes". These classes are based on building character, but, as part of the foundation and support for the building of a life. One of the main principles we teach is the Circle of Control. We want kids to learn that it is not so much what happens to them that determines the outcome of their lives, but how they respond to what happens to them. Rather than worry and try to change things they cannot control, we encourage them to direct their energies to the things over which they have some control. That primarily involves personal attitudes and actions. Using Jesus' parable of the wise and foolish builders, we challenge the juveniles to build their lives on things that are true and things that will last. Discussion centers around: Seeking truth rather than illusion Accepting the responsibility for one's choices and being accountable Replacing destructive thinking with healthy thinking Forming good habits Learning to be respectful. The focus is always on life: choose life rather than death; choose blessing rather than curses. Through these classes and emotional support, the juvenile has the opportunity to return to the community with the tools they need to change their lives; therefore, able to contribute to their own success; which is our goal.
