The Canyon Police Department was granted State Recognition status February 20, 2008 and re-recognized on November 9, 2011 and November 2, 2015. Chief Dale Davis was appointed as Chief of Police October 5, 2009. Chief Dale Davis is a lifelong resident of Canyon, Texas, attending public schools in Canyon and both West Texas State University and Amarillo College. He earned the professional designation of G.M.I. after graduating in 1996 from the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute at Sam Houston State University. In addition, he earned the designation of C.P.M. after graduating in 2003 from the Center for Public Services at Texas Tech University and the William P. Hobby Center for Public Service of Southwest Texas State University. Chief Davis has roughly 3500 TCOLE training hours. Chief Davis attended the 23rd Academy at Amarillo College and began his career with the West Texas State University Police Department in July 1979. In July 1980, Chief Davis went to work for the Canyon Police Department. He quickly rose up the ranks until he was appointed Chief of Police in 2009. Chief Davis has served as Board of Director for the Canyon Lions Club and is currently Board Chairman for the Law Enforcement Advisory Board of Amarillo College.
