The Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities (TuscBDD) arose from a grassroots effort by parents and concerned citizens in 1955 to provide educational services to 12 children with developmental disabilities through the creation of Starlight School. Over time, Starlight School has evolved into TuscBDD, which is a publicly funded county governmental entity offering an array of programs for over 500 eligible individuals. We officially became Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities in October 2009.

Under direct supervision of the Behavior Support Supervisor, the Behavior Support Assistant gathers and compiles data related to student behavior. Working primarily in public school districts, the Behavior Support Assistant models and implements behavior intervention strategies to assist school staff and parents in the implementation of a student’s Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). Utilizes Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) methodologies to promote a positive school experience that encourages each student’s growth and achieves the least restrictive educational placement. A Behavior Support Assistant only intervenes physically when a student’s actions pose an extreme risk of harm to self or others.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Assists with behavioral assessments and implementation of individual behavioral strategies in compliance with all rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the Ohio Department of Education, Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, and TuscBDD.
- Partners with TuscBDD and public school district staff to refer youth to appropriate external supports when needed and collaborates with in-home behavioral support services.
- Completes initial crisis prevention/intervention training and participates in regular drills and refresher courses as assigned.
- Demonstrates the ability to function effectively with management staff and as a member of a team with others at the worksite and other settings.
- Maintains and updates records related to the development and implementation of the BIP.
- Collects and charts behavioral data. Completes required documentation and reports in a timely and efficient manner.
- Provides support to teachers, classroom staff, and parents in monitoring individual student behavior.
- Models the use of Applied Behavior Analysis methodologies in increasing or decreasing target behaviors.
- Performs student observations at assigned school sites for the purpose of initial training and ongoing support, including follow-up activities related to data collection.
- Intervenes physically only when a student’s behaviors pose a threat of harm to self or others.
- Observes children in classroom settings to ensure proper implementation of plans and to monitor plans for effectiveness.
- Participates as a member of the Starlight School multi-disciplinary outreach team.
- Maintains composure and poise with emotional students, school staff, parents, caregivers, visitors, and others.
- Demonstrates written and verbal communication skills; establishes and maintains a working rapport with school staff members, families, other service providers, and the general public.
- Facilitates summer school activities for youth served by the Starlight School outreach program.
- Attends regional behavior support committee meetings, conferences and seminars as required; assists with special projects and events as assigned.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
- Follows Board policies and procedures, applicable laws, rules, regulations and standards.
- Carries out related duties as requested.
