While the names of these guards may change, the duties expected of these individuals are largely the same.

The makeshift sign caught the attention of parents Rachel Sullivan and Colleen Wright, who decided to rally the community to help make the beloved crossing guard's dream come true.

The incident comes about a week after three crossing guards — Raphaela Velasquez, Vanna Gibson and Barbie Hemmingsen — visited Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts to appeal for help in getting drivers to behave in school zones.

The crossing guards say they operate in a constant state of fear — for the students they are trying to help and for their own safety, according to the release.

Hemmingsen said the crossing guards sometimes endure taunts and negative gestures from angry drivers who are in a hurry.

Crossing guards are employees of the Clarksville Police Department, which provides training, equipment and supervision, but guards are not authorized to write tickets or make arrests, according to the release.
