How to Become a Bursar

A bursar is a college or university official who is responsible for overseeing student billing and payments.

The bursar usually supervises an office which includes a number of employees.

The word originates from the Latin bursarius, or “purse-bearer,” referencing the fact that bursars hold the purse of the institutions they work for, managing student accounts.

The bursar's office accepts funds from student lenders, applying those payments to the student's outstanding account and providing students with refund checks for any excess funds, and it also takes scholarship money along with direct payments from students.

Although bursar isn’t actually monopoly money in your parents’ eyes when they see the mysterious “Dining Retail” charges on your tuition bill, it’s the closest that we have to completely worriless financial freedom. So for all you freshman and upperclassmen whose parents haven’t quite figured this one out yet, here are the best spots to eat when the “real money” is running low.

Some bursars, by the very nature of their role and school size, are forced to truly act as a ‘Jack of all Trades’ whilst others benefit from dedicated support teams comprising HR, finance, estates managers and more.  At its annual conference in May the ISBA held a session entitled ‘The 21st Century Bursar – a Jack of all Trades?’ examining the transitioning nature of the role and the skills needed to run the multi-million pound labour intensive businesses that we call independent schools.

More than 76% of those questioned believed that they required additional training to meet the changing management and leadership needs of their role.  Some favoured MBA level training and those with MBAs prior to taking on the role have said they found them to be extremely useful.  Attendance at ISBA training scored highly in the responses, with bursars also requesting further master class training and shorter, subject specific residential training with formal qualifications.
