Position Title: Director of Transportation

Job Summary: The position reports to the Chief Operation Safety and Risk Management Officer. The Director of Transportation is responsible for pupil transportation and vehicle maintenance for the Peoria Unified School District.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES generally include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
- Develops and administers a transportation program to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurricular activities.
- Directs the preparation and updating of bus routes and schedules for all District schools and all out of District contract schools
- Interviews, recommends for hiring, trains and supervises all transportation department personnel
- Provides for inventory control and directs maintenance of all district owned transportation equipment and develops plans for preventive maintenance measures.
- Prepares and administers the transportation budget and is responsible for short and long range Department planning.
- Maintains safety standards in conformance with District, State and Federal regulations.
- Works with school Administrators and others in all transportation related issues.
- In conjunction with school Administrators takes an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses.
- Develops recommendations for future equipment and personnel needs.
- Acts as a liaison with parents regarding problems, complaints and special requests pertaining to transportation.
- Conforms to all Governing Board Policy, State Laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
- Submits all reports required by District Administration and state authorities.
- Attends appropriate committee, staff and district meetings.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Knowledge of applicable Federal, state, county, and city statutes, rules, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of applicable Peoria Unified School District and departmental policies and procedures.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, vendors, students, parents, the general public and others having business with the school district.
- Must possess outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Experience in initiating, facilitating and implementing short and long-range goals and planning.
- Strong knowledge of state and federal legal requirements related to pupil transportation.
- Prefer knowledge of technical aspects of, specifications and operation of school busses and support vehicles.
- A commitment to work toward innovative responses to the transportation needs of the district.
- Prefers knowledge of Edulog, TOM, SEON, and other transportation related software.
- Prefer knowledge of alternative fuel technology.
- Experience in the development of policy, procedures, and communications which foster a positive, safe, and productive school climate.
- Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Preferred a minimum of five years experience in school transportation. Preferred BA Degree in Business Management, Education or related field. Prefer graduate degree in Business Management and or related field. OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
