Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Physician Billing Services provides patient business services to dental patients at the Dental Faculty Practice and the undergraduate and graduate student clinics. PBS provides management and decision support, financial analysis, account maintenance and faculty administrative support.
Position Summary
The Director of Revenue Cycle reports to the Associate Dean of Finance and Administration to support key fiscal and operational components of the clinical practice and patient revenue cycle operations. These include direct management responsibility for staffing and operations in the Patient Billing Services (PBS) office and will work closely and in partnership with the Clinical Affairs team. Centralized functions include: Payor Contracting and Evaluation, Regulatory Compliance and Coding; Insurance and Patient Billing, Follow-up and Collections; Cash Management of Professional Fee Revenue, Fee Schedule management; and Reporting and Analytics.
The Director of Revenue Cycle for the UNC Adams School of Dentistry (ASOD) oversees revenue cycle management, strategy, and business analytics for a practice that bills more than $23 million per year. The Director is responsible for the performance of the revenue cycle, including developing, implementing, managing, and continuously improving operational performance.
The Director will be expected to implement workflows which optimize staff performance, standardize policies and procedures, and to leverage technology. The Director must apply strong communication skills to develop cohesive and high-functioning teams, establish positive relationships with providers, and partner with senior ASOD leaders. Components of this will require being a supportive mentor, catalyst and champion for change, project planner, and cross-functional collaborator with other areas.
This position must monitor and drive performance, assess opportunities to improve, report performance against key performance indicators to senior leaders in the ASOD, and demonstrate the school’s patient revenue cycle operation is meeting or exceeding industry standards.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Masters with 2 yrs supervisory experience and 7 years of relevant experience; or Bachelors with 4 yrs supervisory experience and 7 years of relevant experience
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Ability to independently manage well-defined business functions for a department unit or an organization.
Ability to apply established policies and procedures related to business practices and internal control procedures.
Ability to develop new policies and procedures related to business practices and internal control procedures to further grow a multi-million dollar clinical enterprise.
Ability to compile and summarize financial data to participate in budget analysis and forecasting.
Ability to function in a full supervisory role that includes the recruitment, selection, and salary management of employees and to develop and/or implement work plans.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Extensive management background in a large organization; solid demonstrated leadership capability; superior financial management and analytical skills; comprehensive knowledge and understanding of academic dental clinical operations, effective written and verbal communication skills with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
Skills and knowledge include: capability to lead a team and produce results; proficiency in setting organizational priorities and goals for the business office; interpersonal skills to be used in working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders; strong focus on customer service and experience with continuous improvement; experience in short-and-long term planning; ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion; and experience with effective management and supervision of staff.
