Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students.     DURATION OF APPOINTMENT: Semester Appointment (15 weeks)

    CREDIT HOURS: 3 per course

    Summary

    The School of Music Program in Composition seeks a part-time/adjunct instructor(s) to teach:

    MUSC*300-01 Scoring to Picture and MUCP-364 MIDI Orchestration beginning Spring of 2024.

    Expected to be positive thought leaders and demonstrate a desire to work collaboratively with a diverse student population in various idioms and styles. The University is particularly interested in reviewing applications from candidates with a demonstrated investment in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and whose identities and/or professional work intersect with or address historically marginalized communities.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities

    • Teach Scoring to Picture. In this course, composers work directly with animation and film majors on collaborative projects.
    • Course content focuses on both technical skills and aesthetical choices involved with writing music for visual media.
    • Teach Midi Orchestration. This course examines instrumentation and orchestration techniques as used within the MIDI orchestra, for ensembles of various sizes, instrumental combinations, and musical genres.
    • Course content focuses on traditional orchestration fundamentals combined with how to make MIDI mock-ups sound professional and realistic.
    • Attend department meetings, juries, readings
    • Establish an inclusive and equitable classroom environment and demonstrate an understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of the University’s faculty, staff, and students
    • Complete all tasks and submit all required teaching materials, including but not limited to course syllabus, assignments, assessment of student work, providing constructive feedback, and issuing grades
    • Make yourself available to students for in-person or virtual office hours
    • May be eligible to teach during the Summer Pre-College Session depending on program need
    • Consider student feedback and contribute ideas for improving the student experience for this course

    Education

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Composition or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience is required.
    • A Master’s Degree is preferred.

    Experience

    • Professional experience in related fields and teaching experience is required
    • Experience teaching at the college level is preferred

    • Possess a high level of music composition artistry and experience
    • Awareness and sensitivity to diverse cultural perspectives, and ability to foster an environment of equity and inclusion
    • Open-mindedness and broad range of experience in regards to musical styles and approaches
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

    Minimum Salary

    • $1,275 per credit is the minimum however salary rates are – commensurate with professional and academic experience
