Paralegal assists and supports attorneys with research and document preparation for court proceedings and legal transactions. Utilizes a variety of sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes to research and analyze legal topics. Being a Paralegal drafts and edits legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, motions, and contracts. Conducts fact-finding, data collection, and analysis used to prepare statements and arguments. Additionally, Paralegal assists attorneys with depositions, interviews, discovery, and investigations. Manages, organizes, and archives documents with software tools and technology. Applies specialized legal terminology appropriately in documents. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically requires Paralegal Certification. Typically reports to an attorney. The Paralegal work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. To be a Paralegal typically requires 4 -7 years of related experience.     This position is located in the Insurance Fraud Division.

    Job Purpose

    Under the general supervision of the Insurance Fraud Division Director, this position provides administrative support to the Insurance Fraud Division.

    Job Functions

    • Perform office administrative functions including, but not limited to scheduling, data entry, scanning, photocopying, collating, faxing; telephone reception, word processing/typing, file management, etc., in accordance with all applicable policies and procedures.
    • Assist with case management; preparation of pleadings and discovery responses; electronic filing of Court documents; review of correspondence to ensure accuracy of information entered; upload correspondence and applicable information related to fraud investigations or prosecutions via client portal, e-mail, etc. into file management system.
    • Draft applicable responses for the Division Director’s or attorney’s review and approval; communicate with external parties (clients, court officials, opposing counsel, etc.) in accordance with the Insurance Fraud Director or counsel; work with attorneys and investigators to properly handle fraud prosecutions; manage multiple on-going assignments; participate in office-wide projects as needed.
    • Perform other related duties as required.

    Minimum And Additional Requirements

    A high school diploma and experience in providing administrative support for an attorney(s) or a legal office.

    Knowledge of the principles, policies, and practices of office management. Knowledge of applicable terminology. Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, policies, and organizational functions. Ability to effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion according to schedules and goals. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to exercise judgement and discretion in interpreting and applying policies and procedures.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Paralegal certificate or Associate's Degree in paralegal studies and five (5) years of experience working in a law office or related agency.

    Additional Comments

    The successful candidate must be able to work independently with minimal supervision; must exercise the ability to obtain, organize and analyze information needed or used to effectively represent the South Carolina Department of Insurance in accordance with written or oral instructions; must be able to follow written and oral instructions.

    Some travel may be required.
