Health Educator is responsible for developing and designing health education programs meant to increase community awareness and knowledge. Conducts needs assessments and keeps up-to-date on changes in health care technology to keep program material current. Being a Health Educator develops, coordinates, and disseminates educational resources and materials. May provide health education outreach and consultation. Additionally, Health Educator requires a bachelor's degree in a related area. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Health Educator work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Prenatal Educator

  • Major Responsibilities

    • Provides prenatal education to expectant parents. Assists with other maternal-child classes as necessary to meet schedule and maintain competence.
    • Utilizes principles of group process and adult learning when teaching groups of expectant parents.
    • Participates in development of childbirth preparation classes.
    • Arranges for, completes and forwards room set-up requests in a timely manner. Responsible for setting up and operating audiovisual equipment.
    • Records class attendance and collects class fees.
    • Assists with evaluations of programs and ensures community and program needs are being met.
    • Maintains positive and productive relationships with physicians, community organizations and community leaders to enhance program recognition and growth.
    • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.

    The position is 0-assigned. We are looking for someone who can teach 3 to 4 classes per month. Our classes range from 3 to 6 hours, depending the class and if it is taught on the week-end or a weekday evening. Our instructors have input into which classes/dates they are scheduled to teach.

    Our Classes Include

    Preparing for Labor and Birth Express: Saturday or Sunday 8 am - 2 pm

    Preparing for Labor and Birth: 2 weekday evenings 6 pm - 9:30 pm

    Preparing for Natural Childbirth: 3 weekday evenings 6 pm - 9:30 pm

    Breastfeeding: Saturday, Sunday or 1 weekday evening 4.5 hours

    Newborn Care Class: Saturday, Sunday or 1 weekday evening 3.5 hours

    Infant CPR: (non-certification Friends and Family class): Weekday evenings 3 hours

    Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required

    • None Required.

    Education Required

    • Bachelor's Degree in Education, or
    • Bachelor's Degree in Health Care Administration or related field.

    Experience Required

    • Typically requires 2 years of experience in Maternal-Child Health environment demonstrating in-depth knowledge of issues related to the maternal-child population or experience in teaching prenatal education.
    • 1 year of L&D nursing experience or certified doula experience or previous childbirth education experience

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

    • Ability to develop positive relationships with a variety of individuals (i.e., patients, physicians, staff, committee members, etc.).
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Proficient computer skills in Word, PowerPoint, Web Searching and other computer systems.

    Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

    • Must have speaking and hearing abilities to communicate/instruct class of 20-30 people.
    • Must be able to stand over 50% of the workday with limited bending and twisting. Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs., including supplies and lifting folders off shelves above head and distributing to classes.
    • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
    • Exposed to normal office environment.
