Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice.     Description of Work Unit
    The College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) is an integral part of the Colorado State University land-grant system. The CAS Dean’s Office is responsible for oversight in fulfilling the land-grant mission in agricultural sciences through teaching, research, community and economic outreach and engagement, in service to and in cooperation with Extension (CSUE) and the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES).

    The USDA-ARS Fort Collins Sugar Beet Genetics Laboratory conducts research on molecular genetics, genomics, and pre-breeding using beet and beet crop wild relative germplasm. This research regularly utilizes ‘wet lab’ molecular biology, field and greenhouse based disease resistance screening, and bioinformatic analyses to identify new disease resistance traits and the genes that confer them.

    Position Summary
    This position will serve as a temporary (not to exceed 9 months) lab technician in the USDA-ARS Fort Collins Sugar Beet Genetics Laboratory. Responsibilities will encompass both laboratory, greenhouse, and field research support. In the wet lab, this position will support high throughput DNA isolation from beet plants and associated quality control steps. In the greenhouse, this position will support both seed production and disease resistance screening, including general plant husbandry. In the field, this position will provide support for field planting, including packaging seed for planting, participating in field layout and planting, and plot maintance including weeding.

    Position Minimum Qualifications
    • Prior experience in a plant science research laboratory that involved either field or greenhouse-based research.



    Preferred Qualifications
    • Prior research support experience in a plant genetics laboratory that included laboratory, greenhouse, and field-based research.
