The Facility Maintenance Technician maintains, troubleshoots and repairs facilities mechanical components and electrical systems in accordance with SOPs (standard operating procedures), internal requirements, manufacturer's specifications and safety policies. Performs skilled maintenance and repair of complex mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and other physical structures. Being a Facility Maintenance Technician recommends purchase of maintenance tools, equipment and supplies as required. Develops, maintains and secures a spare parts inventory of basic maintenance hand and power tools. In addition, Facility Maintenance Technician assists engineers in developing methods and procedures to improve facility efficiency and work flow. Oversee and review the work of lower-level technicians. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to supervior or manager. Being a Facility Maintenance Technician works under moderate supervision. Gains or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Working as a Facility Maintenance Technician typically requires 1-3 years of related experience, or may need 0 years of experience with additional specialized training and/or certification.     The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is recruiting for the Facility Maintenance Technician I (FMT I) position.  This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill current and future vacancies in this classification throughout the agency.
     

    This is the entry level of maintenance and construction work on facilities such as bridges, buildings, bulkheads, highways, parking areas, piers, railroads, ramps, roads, taxiways, tunnels, or adjacent areas of the Maryland Department of Transportation. Employees utilize the tools, operate the motorized equipment, and perform the manual tasks essential to the upkeep and appearance of a facility. Employees work independently or as members of a crew. At the journey level, employees may work within a specialized trade.  Employees do not supervise, but may provide guidance, instruction, and assistance to other employees.

    Incumbents receive general supervision from a Facility Maintenance Technician IV or other designated official. This is maintenance work requiring physical exertion, which is performed either outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MDOT building. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds, and may also be required to work at high elevations or perform their job in cramped quarters in buildings or underground. Employees in this class are considered essential employees and are subject to call-in 24 hours a day, as may be required in order to maintain continuous and safe operation of a facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shift work, to include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

    Minimum Qualification:

    Education:  Completion of the eighth grade.

    Experience:  None.

    License: Employees must possess a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland with less than four (4) points.

    1.  Employees in the Facility Maintenance Technician I classification are assigned duties which require the operation of motor vehicles.  Employees must possess a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.  During the probationary period, the employee will be required to obtain and maintain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland, depending on the type of equipment operated, that must be maintained for continued employment.  This includes obtaining and maintaining a valid US DOT Medical Card (or MVA-issued waiver) every two years. Note:

    Note:  Employees must meet all Department of Budget and Management policies required for operation of State-owned vehicles to continue employment.

    2.  Candidates hired into the Facility Maintenance Technician I, classification must satisfy the employing administration's training and certification program requirements during the probationary period.
     
    3.  Employees in the Facility Maintenance Technician I classification must satisfy the employing administration's training and certification program requirements to be eligible for advancement to higher levels.
     
    4.  Employees seeking transfer to another administration must satisfy that administration's training and certification program requirements.
     1.  Applicants may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform maintenance on high structures and in cramped quarters in tunnels, underground and in buildings.

    2.  Employees must be willing and available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous and safe operation of a facility.  Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link at their own expense for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.

    3.  Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing, pass hazardous materials training and have the ability to wear a respirator.

    4.  Employees in these classifications are considered "Essential Employees" and may be required to sign and agree to all policies and procedures relating to "Essential Employee" status.

    5.  Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

    6.  Employees in this classifications are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

    QUESTION:  I’ve interviewed, now what?
    ANSWER:  You will be provided directions by your HR representative which will include undergoing a background investigation and medical screening through Concentra.
     
    QUESTION:  I can't make it to/missed my Concentra appointment what should I do?
    ANSWER:  Contact the Concentra location directly where your appointment was scheduled to be handled at. Also, inform your HR representative.
     
    QUESTION:  I’ve completed everything and still haven’t received a job offer. What’s the hold up?
    ANSWER:  It will depend on your specific circumstances, but it could be one of the following:
     
    • Background investigation still on-going
    • There are no current vacancies in the shops you indicated you would like to be considered for
    • Pending additional medical evaluations (this would have been discussed with you during your medical screening). There may be several items causing a delay
    • Other issues
    QUESTION:  How long will I have to wait for a start date?
    ANSWER:  This is largely dependent on what shops have current vacancies and how quickly you complete all the steps of the recruitment process. It is critical that you quickly schedule any fingerprinting or medical screenings and return all paperwork as soon as you can.
