POSITION: Emergency Medical Technician

DUTIES: Responds to emergency calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured, and transports patient to a medical facility. May be assigned by supervisor to drive ambulance to location given, using most expeditious route, depending on traffic conditions. Use two-way radio to transmit information. Determines nature and extent of illness or injury and establishes priority for necessary emergency care. Renders appropriate emergency care. Where patients must be extricated from entrapment, assesses extent of injury and provides all possible emergency care and protection to the entrapped patient and uses prescribed techniques and tools for safe extrication. Assists in lifting and carrying patient to and from ambulance. Constantly observes patient enroute to emergency facility and administers additional care as indicated. Reports verbally and in writing his/her observations and care of patient to emergency department staff for record and diagnostic purposes. Maintains stock of linen and medical supplies in ambulance. Ensures that ambulance is clean and orderly. Submits ambulance inspection report daily. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Practical experience in the emergency aid to the sick and injured.
Knowledge of and practical experience in the care and use of emergency medical equipment commonly accepted and employed by Delaware County EMS.
Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations, including those that apply to emergency vehicle operation.
Ability to safely operate ambulance under all road conditions.
Working knowledge of streets, roads, major industrial installations and public buildings in Delaware County.
Must be able to lift and carry 125 pounds.
Maintain knowledge of 3 lead EKG interpretation.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent.
EMT-B or EMT-A certification by the Indiana State Emergency Medical Services Commission.
Six months paid experience as Emergency Medical Technician.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must have valid Indianamotor vehicle operator’s license.
On call 24 hours; must have home telephone.
Attend training sessions, schools and public relations activities as assigned.
Must attend required Audit & Review held by Ball Memorial Hospital.
