Being a Dean of Students counsels the top management regarding overall student morale and services. Typically requires an advanced degree. Additionally, Dean of Students typically reports to top management. The Dean of Students manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Students typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     The Dean of Students, is a full-time, 12-month position responsible to the Associate Vice-Provost, Student Affairs. The Dean of Students is responsible for policy development, administration, supervision of staff, budget development and oversight, and program planning and implementation for the Office of the Dean of Students. The Dean of Students is responsible for the management and direction of Student Support Services, which includes TRIO, EOC, Disability Services, and Counseling, as well as the Office of Student Conduct. The Dean of Students is responsible for creating programming and activities that encourage a safe environment for students that is conducive to learning, and contributes to their intellectual, emotional, and academic development. The Dean of Students is the point of contact for the Behavioral Intervention Team and the Foster Care Liaison. The Dean of Students serves as an advocate for students and the student voice in College decisions that directly affect students’ education and well-being. Duties include assisting various offices in the interpretation and implementation of federal laws and guidelines such as FERPA, serving on College committees, and performing other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs. As the College grows and develops, additional duties and departments will be added to the Dean of Students to further support students.

    Primary ResponsibilitiesOffers student growth and professional development opportunities through increased classroom, campus, and community engagement initiatives.Enhances academic education through the development of policies and programs which promote the personal growth and development of students.Assures compliance with laws and regulations and minimizes institutional liability by systematically reviewing College compliance with federally-mandated reporting and disclosure requirements; remaining knowledgeable of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting areas of responsibility; creating and modifying policies, procedures, and practices in order to become/remain compliant; and advising others in the interpretation and application of laws and regulations.Serves as the point of contact for students desiring to articulate a complaint or file a formal grievance. The Dean is responsible for assuring that each student is afforded due process according to TJC Board policy.Oversees the Student Conduct Committee.Develops a competent, productive, and effective departmental staff by supervising, directly and through delegation, administrative, professional, and clerical support personnel.Assures accountability and proper utilization of funds by overseeing the planning, implementation, and administration of the budgets for the Office of the Dean of Students, Student Support Services, Disability Services, and the Code of Conduct Office.Assures fair and impartial disposition of student disciplinary issues by overseeing the Office of Student Conduct and administration of the Student Code of Conduct.Leads the Behavioral Intervention Team and promotes its utilization among students, faculty, and staff to evaluate and appropriately intervene with those whose behavior may be harmful of disruptive to themselves or others. Secondary ResponsibilitiesAssists with emergencies involving students.Serves as a resource for faculty and staff on student behavioral issues in the classroom and workplace.Serves as a resource to parents who have concerns about their children who are students at Tyler Junior College.Supports retention of students through initiatives, interventions and appropriate referrals.Promotes a positive image of the College and provides pertinent information through College publications for students, parents, and student organizations.Promotes a positive image of the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of the Dean of Students and represents both on College committees as needed.Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of all backgrounds.Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs.Contributes to the overall success of Student Affairs by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.CompetenciesKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge and experience in Student AffairsExcellent writing and interpersonal communications skills Mature judgment and problem-solving skillsAbility to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students Experience working in diverse environment and/or with students from diverse backgrounds is required
