Networks with community leaders and officials to raise awareness of specific social or environmental issues. Being a Community Organizer plans and devises action plans to access resources. Organizes community members to work toward a common goal supported by staff and volunteer workers. Additionally, Community Organizer may require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Community Organizer work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. Washington CAN! is currently working on several issue-based campaigns: Universal Healthcare, Mass Liberation (re-frame of mass incarceration), Housing Justice, and further democratizing our institutions, legal processes, boards, laws, etc.

    Position Description:

    Field Organizers engage with community members to educate, motivate and activate people to become more engaged with the democratic process in order to affect policy and elections. Field Organizers are often the first touch people have with our organization, and thus convey information to new and existing members about our mission, vision, values, and overall work on issues like Healthcare, Mass Liberation, Housing, Reproductive Justice, and Gender, Racial, and Economic Justice. Field Organizers will work on voter registration and getting out the vote to elect politicians that reflect the mission of Washington CAN! From the Presidential ticket and other down ballot races.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • A commitment to fighting for racial, gender, and economic justice.
    • Ability to develop and implement goals based on grassroots strategies and tactics.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; committed to helping others.
    • Enthusiasm for a work environment where diversity based on race, nationality, gender, age, sexual orientation and physical ability is an important value.
    • Speaking a second language is appreciated but not required. Desired languages include Spanish, Somali, Arabic, Russian, Punjabi, and Vietnamese.
    • Self-motivated, resourceful, creativity and problem solving skills.
    • Effective communication and active listening skills.
    • Values self-improvement, able to accept praise and constructive criticism while implementing feedback and evaluation.
    • Good time management and the ability to work under pressure.

    The Field Organizer position is full-time or part-time with a competitive salary (pay starts at $22.58 an hour, with strong potential for additional financial bonuses), health and dental coverage after 90 days, 401(k) pension plan, and paid holiday, vacation, and sick leave. The Field Manager position starts at $25.53 per an plus excellent financial bonus opportunities and aforementioned benefits. Individuals hired as Field Organizers can follow a path to advance quickly.

    Transportation is not required.

    Paid Internships are available.
