    ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION

    Perform routine tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease and performs related duties following established standards and practices.

    INTERACTION

    Primarily Interacts with: physicians, employees, clinical and non-clinical departments, patients, visitors, and volunteers.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Maintain established hospital policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
    • Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
    • Perform all required procedures related to counting and identification of blood cells, coagulation studies, specialized hematology procedures, chemical analysis of specimens, serologic and transfusion medicine procedures and microscopic evaluation of specimens, if required.
    • Perform venipunctures on patients observing strict principles of asepsis and anti- sepsis to prevent infection of patient and contamination of specimens.
    • Receive specimens sent to the laboratory and centrifuges blood specimens to separate cells from serum or plasma.
    • Consult with Pathologist regarding difficult analysis or abnormal findings.
    • After testing, discard samples per hospital policy or store per laboratory policy for future reference
    • Prepare reagents, solutions and stains according to standard formulas and procedures or manufacturer’s recommendations.
    • Perform gram stains, wet mounts and sets up bacterial cultures. Incubates cultures.
    • Perform quality control per laboratory policy, maintains required records, reports and statistics as directed.
    • Maintain inventory by requesting needed supplies, issues and receives supplies per laboratory policy.
    • Adjust schedule to maintain staff coverage.
    • Participate in educational programs and inservice meetings.
    • Provide exemplary customer service.
    • Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA.
    • Cooperate with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives and maintain good employee relations, inter-departmental objectives and infection control policies.
    • Cordially demonstrate timeliness and professionalism in appearance, communications, and actions during all interactions and with all individuals and entities.
    • Solve practical problems, dealing with a variety of issues, and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written and oral form.
    • Attend meetings as required.
    • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.


    Requirements

    ABILITY TO USE EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, MATERIALS, MACHINES: Computer, telephone, facsimile machine, copier, scanner, printer, calculator, other standard office equipment and laboratory equipment.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in biology or chemistry preferred or minimum of 8 semester hours of college chemistry and 8 hours of college biology or Professional registry; High school diploma or equivalent required.

    Experience:

    • One year of general lab expierence preferred.
    • Medical office or healthcare experience preferred.

    • Must be committed to quality and patient safety at all times.
    • Excellent command / highly proficient in spoken and written English; bilingual in Spanish preferred.
    • Basic computer skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, information security, electronic medical documentation, and email.
    • Must be effective at adjusting to change, prioritizing duties, handling stress and effectively communicating face-to-face and/or over the telephone.
    • Must be able to work independently, and flexibly, and as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
