PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Category Buyer plays a pivotal role in securing cost-effective, high-quality fresh produce and ensuring timely planning and scheduling of receipt to maintain optimal par levels for the distribution facility. This position involves continuously identifying and sourcing optimal suppliers of fresh produce, monitoring market trends, gathering pertinent market information, and making recommendations for process improvement. Strong knowledge of commodities, including vegetables, fruits, and herbs, is essential. Each employee is expected to uphold a positive image of the company, communicate respectfully and professionally with peers, supervisors, and customers, and demonstrate maturity in navigating ambiguous situations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Secure and analyze quotations, negotiate prices and terms with suppliers, and recommend suppliers based on cost, quality, and delivery competitiveness for assigned responsibilities.
• Consult with existing vendors to obtain product information such as price, availability, and delivery schedule.
• Demonstrate good knowledge of fresh produce, including seasonality and geography of fresh produce supply.
• Maintain awareness of market trends, technology, and food safety.
• Minimize shrinkage/spoilage of fresh fruits and vegetables.
• Communicate with vendors regarding the status of an order.
• Effectively communicate with all department supervisors and at all levels of the organization.
• Contact vendors regarding discrepancies with quantity and quality.
• Interface with all departments to resolve problems and issues.
• Build teams and establish relationships.
• Review bid proposals and negotiate contracts within budgetary limitations and scope of authority.
• Communicate favorable purchasing opportunities to management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge of PACA regulations pertaining to good arrival and inspection parameters.
• Experience in product specification and quality parameters.
• Strong negotiating and problem-solving skills.
• Highly organized with strong multitasking skills, able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and under pressure, meet deadlines, and accomplish team objectives.
• Excellent computer skills, including AS400, Word, Excel, and 10-key, with the ability to prepare purchase orders or bid requests as required.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, decision-making ability, organization, and prioritization of multiple tasks, effective time management, and open work schedule.
• Flexibility to work flexible hours, with a minimum of 40 hours per week, including some weekends and holidays as business requires.
• Ability to lift 40 pounds, with previous forklift and pallet jack experience preferred.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

• High School diploma or equivalent required; minimum of five years of produce experience in a procurement capacity with inventory management, replenishment, and/or forecasting with perishable products preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
