    Purpose of Classification

    Performs technical work in inspection, code enforcement, repair and/or building maintenance function. Duties include maintaining new and existing structures. Positions in this class perform routine code enforcement and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer maintenance questions; and maintain repair documents and records.


    Essential Functions

    The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.


    Drives to each construction site and performs code-based inspections; issues Violation Notices on public safety concerns as well as structures being built, erected, or modified without proper permits; researches on property setbacks and easements


    Keeps records of all inspections performed; prioritizes those which do not meet minimum code requirements; monitors existing job sites for compliance.


    Performs on-site residential and commercial inspections; inspects ongoing construction and repairs or modifications for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances; inspects existing structures for violations of safety or sanitation regulations, or when adopted codes and ordinances require an inspection.


    Notifies contractor, subcontractor, engineer, architect or homeowner of code violations and discusses possible options to correct violations; maintains files of inspections, re-inspections, inspector notes and required reports; compiles status reports on specific assignments, as requested.


    Provides assistance and information to employees, managers, vendors, citizens, local businesses, and/or and other interested parties regarding assigned code enforcement functions; serves as liaison between supervisors, vendors, and other departments in regards to department policies and activities. Explains policies and procedures.


    Prepares various department documents requiring knowledge of department policies, programs, and procedures and which may involve researching, compiling, analyzing, retrieving and/or summarizing data.

    Performs other related duties as required.


    Minimum Qualifications

    High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of experience performing technical and/or repair work in construction including electrical, mechanical, plumbing experience or semi-skilled position; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must have a valid Texas Driver's License.


    ADA Compliance


    Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (20-50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or work station.


    Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.


    Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Exposure to damp/wet surfaces, duty conditions, fumes and odors, flammable liquids and high noise levels.


    This position is subject to a six (6) month probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility; Must submit to a Civil Service clerical exam.
