About This Role:
Applications are invited for a tenure-track faculty positions in Mechanical Engineering at the rank of assistant professor. Although, general area of specialization may be considered, preference will be given to those with background in materials engineering, smart materials, nano- micro materials, or additive manufacturing. Duties will include teaching a range of undergraduate and graduate courses, developing laboratory facilities, supervising graduate and undergraduate student research, and undertaking an active, funded research program. The successful candidate is expected to develop a high impact research program in one of the modern mechanical engineering areas, stated above. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience relevant for the advertised position.
What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities- Teaching: Develop and deliver undergraduate and graduate courses in mechanical engineering, aligned with the department’s curriculum and learning objectives. Provide effective instruction, mentorship, and academic advising to students. Employ innovative teaching methods and technologies to enhance student learning outcomes.
- Research: Establish and lead an independent, externally funded research program in an area of mechanical engineering specialization. Conduct high-impact research, publish scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals, and present findings at national and international conferences. Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams and pursue partnerships with industry and government agencies.
- Service: Contribute to departmental, university, and professional service activities, including committee assignments, curriculum development, accreditation processes, and outreach initiatives. Participate in academic governance, engage in community service, and represent the department at professional conferences and events.
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, research, and scholarly activity.
- Ability to direct master and doctoral theses.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative academic environment.
- Evidence of research productivity, including peer-reviewed publications and successful grant proposals.
- Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service activities.
- Experience or interest in utilizing innovative teaching methods and technologies to enhance student learning outcomes.
- Ability to contribute to the department’s mission and strategic goals through teaching excellence, research productivity, and service to the profession.
Job Conditions: Lamar’s undergraduate mechanical engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET , https:// www.abet.org/. The department has approximately 380 undergraduate and 80 graduate students. The department offers both Bachelor and Master of Science in Engineering degrees as well as Doctor of Engineering degrees. Lamar University, located in Beaumont, TX, is a public university and part of the Texas State University System. The university has experienced tremendous growth over the past decade, with enrollment steadily increasing to more than 17,000. The metropolitan Beaumont area is located 85 miles east of Houston and has a population of 120,000. Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)- Minimum qualifications include an earned undergraduate in mechanical engineering and PhD degrees in mechanical or a cognate area.
- Proven ability for excellence in both teaching and research in the areas relevant to the position. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
- Those with industry experience and/or prior teaching experience.
- A strong record of research and publications.
