Close the Gender Wage Gap

by Salary.com Staff - Original publish date: October 26, 2015

All of our guests on Salary Talk are winners. But this group of Carnegie Mellon University graduate students truly fits the bill, as they were named one of the grand prize winners of Challenge.gov's Equal Pay App Challenge.

David Guarino and Rachel Koch are part of a team of developers who created www.closethewagegap.com, in response to the U.S. Department of Labor's call to action in January. The challenge was developed in conjunction with President Obama's Equal Pay Task Force, with the purpose of highlighting the discrepancy in pay between men and women. Although the Department of Labor has public salary statistics, Salary.com was approached in January and asked to offer the developers access to our private salary data. We have never given out our data free of charge, but felt this was a worthwhile cause to ensure something near and dear to our hearts -- equal pay for everyone.

Guarino and Koch used Salary.com's API to come up with a website that clearly and accurately shows how much gender still plays into our paychecks. Aaron and Wendy talk to the grand prize winners about the application, what it does, how to use it, and what benefits it has for all users. You don't have to be a woman to appreciate this great podcast, and once you're done listening please head over to www.closethewagegap.com and give it a try!
