Why Americans are Too Scared to Negotiate Salary

Lack of Confidence & Skills are Top Reasons Workers Don't Negotiate

Men Are More Likely to Negotiate

Do they teach negotiation skills on Mars and not Venus?

Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever, authors of Women Don’t Ask: The High Price of Avoiding Negotiation, claim that men are four times more likely to negotiate salary than women. This year’s statistics confirm that men are more likely to negotiate salary during a job interview and performance review, with 36% of men claiming they always negotiate salary compared to 26% of women. On the other end of the spectrum, 17% of men never negotiate while 23% of women say the same.

And while men are more afraid of losing the job offer than women, women report a greater lack of confidence, don’t feel they have adequate negotiation skills, and 67% of women feel a greater sense of unpleasantness regarding negotiating as compared to 50% of men.
