In the end, this all boils down to common sense.
Notice we're not saying all political or non work-related conversations should be eliminated. An office that never talks about anything other than work will ultimately lack a culture and personality that attracts top talent. But politics is very personal to a lot of people, and if a political diatribe upsets a coworker (even if it was unintentional), that fallout could have repercussions both personal and professional in terms of the bottom line.
