Lactation Consultant provides lactation support and education to patients and families. May plan and lead breastfeeding classes for expecting mothers. Being a Lactation Consultant is responsible for identifying and correcting lactation problems, and advising physicians and healthcare providers on lactation problems experienced by patients. Requires an associate degree in nursing or equivalent. Additionally, Lactation Consultant requires Registered Nurse (RN) License. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.     EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION : Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required. ######### RN license or Bachelor#s Degree preferred.

    Provides reassurance, acceptance and encouragement. 4.##### Provides information in an unbiased manner and encourages parents to make informed choices based on their own needs and preferences.

    Demonstrates acceptance of patients# feelings, rights and choices as evidenced by patient feedback.# 5.##### Works collaboratively with maternity and NICU staff to develop breastfeeding policies and protocols for all breastfeeding dyads.

    6.##### Shares educational resources with maternity and NICU staff through in-services and one to one communication. 7.

    Provides written documentation of care and treatment recommendations. 8.##### Provides follow-up for at-risk patients after leaving hospital.

    9.##### Plans class material to meet participants# level of understanding.# Ensures that requested topics are covered in class.

    Relates to clients in a supportive, affirmative and open manner.# Is sensitive and responsive to cultural differences.# Displays approachability as evidenced by participants# comments on class evaluations.
